Cusco, in the south of the Peruvian Andes (3250 masl) is the first tourist city of the country and one of the most important cities in America. It was known by the Incas as the "Sacred City", Cusco is the capital of one of the main pre-Columbian empires: the Tahuantinsuyo.
Its name in Quechua, Qosqo, means the "belly of the world", because during their time, it controlled a wide network of roads that joined practically all South America, from the South of Colombia to the North of Argentina.

Historical Sanctuary of Machu Picchu registered on the Word Heritage list in 1983
he ancient citadel of Machu Picchu, at the South of the Peruvian Andes, is the main attraction of Cusco. Discovered in 1911 by the American researcher Hiram Bingham, the citadel is considered the most extraordinary example of landscape architecture in the world. Machu Picchu ("Old Mountain" in quechua, the ancient language of the Incas) is located at the top of a mountain that governs the deep canyon of the Urubamba River, in the middle of the tropical jungle. It is believed that it was a centre for worship and astronomical observation or the private dwellings of the Inca Pachacutec family.

Archaeological Complex of Chavin registered in the World Heritage list in 1985

Chavin de Huantar archaeological site, belonging to the period from year 1000 to 300 b.C., represents the synthesis of the development of the Andean culture. Located at 3185 masl and only three hours away from the Huaraz city highway, Chavin religious center was built entirely with stone, with underground hallways and a series of pyramid-shaped structures. Inside the complex, some bass-relief figures can be observed on arches and columns, mixing characters of felines, bird of preys and snakes, elements that are always present in Chavin iconography. The "Lanzon” can be found in the underground gallery. This is a great monolith of 3.75 meters tall with the shape of a big spearhead. Chavin is one of the most ancient religious sites of America.

THuascaran National Park registered in the World Heritage list in 1985.
The Huascaran is the second highest park in the South American Andes, and it constitutes the heart of the highest tropical mountain chains in the world. Its high plains and the glacial peak of the snow covered mountain, which exceeds 6000 meters of altitude, are the environment for diverse fauna species to coexist, like the condor, the vicugna, the white-tailed deer, the puma, the vizcacha rat, the cat and the Andean fox. The Huascaran Park has 27 mountains, 663 glaciers, 269 lakes and 41 rivers.

Chan Chan Archaeological Area registered in the World Heritage list in 1986

Chan Chan is internationally known as the biggest mud citadel of the Pre-Hispanic World. In Yunga language, Jang Jang means "sun, sun". It was the religious capital of the Chimu dominion (700 - 1400 a.C.), at the valley of the Moche river, in the department of La Libertad (North of Peru). Its extension is approximately 20 Km2, and it is thought to have been inhabited by one hundred thousand people approximately. The city was the urban center of a vast regional state that ruled half of the Peruvian coast from Tumbes and the border with Equator to the South of Lima.

Manu National Park registered in the World Heritage list in 1987

The park is located between the provinces of Manu (Madre de Dios) and Paucartambo (Cusco), and it comprises the territories on the hillsides of the Oriental Andesin the Peruvian Amazon jungle. Several tribes live there, and at present most of them have no contact with the rest of the world. The park is also the paradise for 20000 varieties of plants, 1200 bird species, 200 mammal species and an unknown number of reptiles, amphibians and insects.

The Historical Center of Lima. In 1988, the San Francisco Monastery was registered in the World Heritage list. In 1991, the Historical Center of Lima was also registered as such.
Lima, a.k.a. the City of Kings, was an oasis for culture and elegance in Spanish America since it was founded. Churches in Baroque and Renaissance styles, palaces with stylized balconies that constitute the remarkable architecture of Lima, a city that offers visitors its museums, art galleries, recreation places and archaeological sites of civilizations previous to the times of the Incas.

National Park of the Abiseo River registered on the World Heritage list in 1990.
Located on the oriental Andes of Peru, the park is in the confluence of the Marañon and Huallaga rivers, both tributaries of the Amazon River. In the area there is an important Pre-Hispanic testimony that fills an area bigger than 1500 Km2 inside and outside the park. Since 1986 the Park of Abiseo River is not open to the public.

Nazca Lines registered in the World Heritage list in 1994.
Two hours away from Ica, the incredible lines depicting animals, birds and divinities cover more than 450 Km2 of the desert. The Nazca Lines, discovered in 1927, are the most important heritage left by the Nazca culture, a civilization that flourished in year 300 b.C. The lines are, in some cases, 300 meters long, so they can only be observed from a certain altitude.

Historical Center of Arequipa registered in the World Heritage list in 2000.
Arequipa, the second biggest city of Peru, is located in the South of the Peruvian Andes. It is also known as "the White City" for the volcanic stone (ashlar), which is used to build houses and public buildings of the city. The surroundings of Arequipa have endless tourist attractions, such as the Colca and Cotahuasi canyons, the former is the deepest in the world. Due to its landscape, the Colca Valley is an impressive natural scenario because of the combination of agricultural terraces from the Incas times and more that a dozen villas founded in the XVI century.

10. Festivals and Popular Rituals
In Peru, almost 3.000 festivals are celebrated every year. Most of them are organized with relation to a patron saint and it is registered in a Christian calendar adopted in the Colonial period, but carefully blended with the magic-religious beliefs of a particular region.
